Lady Killers: Escher Chronicle Part 1

Megara peered from behind the shattered rockcrete.  The Suns on the rooftop had been dropping some serious firepower onto her girls on the flank, but hadn't managed to put anyone down.  "Let me show you how it's done" she hissed as she racked the action on her beloved combi bolter.  Emboldened by the display of ordinance one of the Van Saar skulked from behind the shelter of an armoured shipping container  She had him cold in the open, pulled the trigger, and smirked as a salvo of deadly rounds cut him down like a puppet bereft it's strings.

I'm happy to report that the Carnadon Queens are painted, and have just returned victorious from their first sortie in our local Necromunda campaign.  A winning game is a pleasant surprise, but the greatest satisfaction came from having the gang turned out and ready for action.  It was a close one.  I had assembled and started painting the figures in a pattern that didn't conform to the rules  (Oh rule of cool how could you fail me?) I hadn't got around to reading.   As a consequence of not having done the paperwork until a few days ago I had to snap off some arms and change the weapon loadouts on a number of models so they would conform to the 1000 credit starting gang they were to represent.  The models are table ready.  I was happy bringing them to table but intend to give them all a going over to improve the detail.  In particular ganger Mean Justine deserves some brush time because she was rather neglected and shone with one of the plays of the week.  The fight proper lasted 3 turns before the Van Saar voluntarily bottled out.  It was a wise decision on Ian's part, but I was still disappointed.  He had some unfortunate rolls in our firefight, but his gangers are much better marksmen than mine and I feared for their safety time his dice fell.  I had accounted for two members of his smaller gang and lost only one as I slogged forward, and was just on the edge of closing to melee which had the potential to be devastating.  At the very least my mildly rad sick champ would have relished shotgunning one of the little weasels in the face.

Newbie Bea Nasty along with Snowball, and Lotta Hertz

I'm a cautious gamer; When I am at all and opted for as large a gang as I could muster with the figures I had available to me.  I don't consider myself a, "lucky" roller of dice and am a firm believer in the quality of quantity.  More gangers means more opportunity.  When I built the force I only considered volume of firepower, but having played my first game with the new Necromunda was grateful for the numerical advantage which protected me from the possibility of bottling out, and more so for the unopposed action having more pieces on the table allowed.

Mean Justine,  Cally Ho,  Mimi the Kid, and Cruela Thunderfeff

A victory isn't much of a victory if you don't learn something from it.  I've been away from the table for quite a while so I was a little lax considering all lines of sight.  A big threat isn't necessarily the only threat and can still get you hurt.  The other takeaway was the importance of cover.  Ducking behind bulkheads didn't stop me from being shot at, but it was a lifesaver in terms of keeping my gangers in the fight.

Megs peppered, and dropped an incautious Van Saar in a hail of bolter fire.  First casualty of the match.

My win didn't come without a price.  Poor Ketta ended up poisoned by a rad spewing Van Saar weapon, and taken out of action where I demonstrated an unexpected Machiavellian streak.  During the post combat phase it was discovered she was in need of medical attention.  The extortionist doc wanted 100 credits!  I consigned my poor soldier to her fate and heartlessly replaced her.  Sure Ketta is dead.  Welcome Bea Nasty.

Mean Justine lurked behind a girder and got mean with her auto gun.  You get a better paint job.  I promise.

They carried Ketta back to Catwalk Falls once the last of the Suns had shown their tails and split.  It had seemed a small thing until her hair started falling out in clumps;  That and the vomiting.  Full blown rad sickness.  The sawbone's eyes took on a predatory glint, and smiled volumes  above his doleful expression.  "100 credits", he ventured in a conciliatory manner.  "Keep the change", growled Megara, as a great gob of spit rolled down his face.  Leave none behind is all well and good, just sometimes it comes down cold, hard creds.

    1. Thanks Micheal. While trying to avoid canon Escher Escher schemes very it seems I pretty much ended up with one anyway. My first paint plan was a green one with scales on the plates, but the figures were so fine I wasn't sure I could sustain that kind of detail across a whole gang; The Desolation Medusas died during the planning stage. I also tried an abortive loud, neon scheme that looked terrible and was a bitch to cover and over paint. If you mean the Prisma images in the presentation it's been something I've wanted to experiment with on the blog. I love the comic style filter, and think it would make an awesome medium for proper AARs (Particularly TWD). This article was more a battle retrospective than AAR, but baby steps.

  2. The Eschers are by far my favourite Necromunda so suffice to say, I love your gang. Lovely paintwork and I like that you've named all your gangers very appropriately. Congrats on your first victory against the Van Saars. I hope its the first of many!

    1. The Escher are a favorite of mine too; Aesthetically and for the quick and deadly (hopefully deadly) play style. The paint work still needs a last pass, but it will be much easier to fine tune a model at a time, rather than pushing through the whole gang. I have a second box on order to bolster the ranks. Having had the experience of working with the models my paint-assembly system will be different, and certainly better. Converting some specialists and painting up a Phyrr Cat proxy should be fun.

    1. Looking badass is pretty awesome, but being badass would be much better. Let's see what happens next fight.
